I have tried a lot of relaxation products and techniques. Your Instant Relaxation recording is far and away the best I have ever encountered.

After listening, I felt more relaxed then ever before. My muscles felt soothed and healed and my mind was clear and refreshed - ready to take on the rest of the day.

It was like I had just woke up from a good night sleep. The best part is, it only took 14 minutes of my time!

I would tell people, if you want to feel more rejuvinated, more alive, and less stressed, you need to get a copy of this recording right away!"

Stress Management

What is Stress?

During the past one hundred years there has been a lot of debate and many theories offered regarding what stress is and what stress is not. We each intuitively know what stress is to us, because we all experience it. Actually defining stress, however, is not so easy.

Hans SelyeHans Selye is one of the founding fathers in stress research. In 1956, Mr. Selye argued, “stress is not necessarily something bad—it all depends on how you take it. The stress of exhilarating, creative, successful work is beneficial, while that of failure, humiliation, or infection is detrimental.”

Selye’s position was that the biochemical effects of stress would be experienced whether the situation was positive or negative.

Since that time, a lot of new research has been conducted, and many new ideas have evolved. Click here to find out the latest scientific way of dealing with stress.

Stress is now widely perceived as a "negative"—as something that produces a range of harmful, long-term biochemical effects. Rarely are these effects observed in positive situations.

Richard Lazarus is attributed with our most commonly accepted definition of stress:

Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.”

Everyone responds differently to stressful events. That stress response is part instinctual and partly determined by how we think. Fortunately, we can teach our minds how to respond more positively to the stressors in our lives.

Not all stress is bad. Some stress in our daily lives is good and challenges us to reach toward even greater heights.

This website is dedicated to helping people everywhere harness the stress in their lives and channel it into something that is beneficial and positive.

Stress Research

Fight-or-Flight Response

Stress Fight or Flight ResponseWalter Cannon conducted some of our earliest stress research back in 1932. He was the person who established the theory of the “fight-or-flight” response. His work proved that when an organism experiences a shock or perceives a threat, it reacts instantly by releasing hormones that help it survive.

In human beings and other animals, these hormones:

  • Allow for greater speed and strength,

  • Increase heart rate and blood pressure to deliver more oxygen and blood sugar to support the major muscles,

  • Increase sweating to better cool the muscles and allow them to remain efficient, and

  • Regulate blood to reduce blood loss if there is any damage to the body.

Essentially, stress hormones focus our attention on the threat—to the exclusion of everything else—thus
producing a heightened ability to survive during a
life-threatening event.

Unfortunately, we can also trigger these same survival reactions when faced with something unexpected or something that frustrates our goals.

And if the threat is small, our response may be so small that we may not even notice the stressor among the many other distractions we experience each day.

And here's where the problem lies…

The mobilization of the body into survival mode also has many negative consequences.

We become excitable, anxious, jumpy, and irritable—all of which can reduce our ability to be effective.

The shakiness and pounding heart produced by these hormones reduces our ability to carry out controlled skills.

Finally, the intensity of our focus on survival reduces our ability to draw information from many sources. Distracted, we are more accident prone and less capable of making good decisions.

To be more productive in our day-to-day lives, we actually require a calm, rational, controlled, and socially sensitive approach to crises.

We need to be able to control our fight-or-flight response, or we may end up with problems such as poor health and burnout.
