PRINCIPLES OF GREATNESS:

Find your ALL-Consuming Desire

By Destin

There are probably few people in history who have demonstrated the power of passion to the degree that the Great Leonardo Da Vinci did. Leonardo Da Vinci (right) was born in 1452. He was the illegitimate son of a wealthy Florentine legal advisor and a peasant girl. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, scientist and engineer. A true Renaissance man.

Leonardo studied under Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his day, for about 12 years before he became an independent master. Andrea provided Leonardo with an all round artistic education, which covered a range of painting and sculpture techniques.  Leonardo went on to paint some of the greatest works of art known to mankind, such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.

One of the things that really seems to emerge from studying Leonardo’s work and his life, is the extraordinary amount of passion that he put into everything he did. Many art critics have mentioned how Leonardo’s paintings differed from those of other artists of his time. One significant difference was the high degree of detail he put into the backgrounds of his works. If you for instance take a look at the Mona Lisa, you will see that it has the most incredible, beautiful and highly detailed background.  [Click on the picture for a larger view and a surprise]

Secondly Leonardo spent a considerable amount of time and energy researching before he would begin a work. His notebooks are loaded with preliminary sketches and studies on various animals that he wanted to include in his paintings. (e.g. The Cat Study included on the Right). But his research didn’t stop there he extended it to anatomy, optics, physics, mathematics and even fluid dynamics to name a few areas. All to understand how to create a better painting. Truly few people in history have demonstrated such passion for a single goal.

And this excludes his other tremendous endeavors, including singing. It is said that Leonardo could harmonize with the Angels.

In his notebooks we discover that there was also a higher more spiritual dimension to his work. One of his notes to himself read:

‘Riches of the Soul surpass, Riches of the Flesh’

Leonardo’s actions clearly reveal an all-consuming passion for his work. Leonardo said that one must make one’s work an Immortal Monument. And this is what we find if we think about his work today. As we all know he invented the helicopter almost 400 years ahead of his time, he also invented the tank and the underwater diving suite. Surely this was a man of remarkable intensity and desire.

But what can we learn from all of this ?

Magnificent Lives are created by Magnificent Obsessions

Destin

We all need a magnificent obsession. Einstein had physics, Bills Gates has computers and Leonardo Da Vinci had art & science.

It is amazing how if we analyze the lives and works of the great we so often find them to be works of soul more than mind. And that is what we need to examine in our own lives. Are our works aimed at earning a pay check (or making money) or are our works aimed at achieving a magnificent purpose ? When our lives are complete, will our works fade away as the grass in the winter or will they enhance the lives of the generations to come ? The answer to this question will only be determined by our passion.
